Happy Ugadi

Ugadi is celebrated in a grand manner in the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Kerala and Telangana. It is the beginning of the new year which is also called as Samvatsaradi. It is observed on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaithra. According to our mythology, Lord Brahma had created this universe on the day of Ugadi followed by days, weeks, months and the years.

In Karnataka, we see Torana made up of Mango leaves at the doors of every house. People take ritual shower and special puja will be done.  Pachadi and Obbattu are the main dishes during Ugadi. “Bevu-Bella” is the common traditional culture during this festival.

In the 12th century, astronomical calculations by the renowned Indian mathematician Bhaskaracharya defined the date of Ugadi from sunrise to sunset as the start of the New Year, a new month, and a new day.
